East Bridgewater Police Officer Injured after Vehicle Hits Cruiser, Driver Arrested for OUI

EAST BRIDGEWATER – Chief Scott Allen reports that the East Bridgewater Police Department arrested a man early this morning after he rear-ended a police cruiser, seriously injuring the officer inside, while he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

RYAN M. MACALUSO, 24, OF ABINGTON is charged with:

• OUI Liquor (second offense)
• Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
• Following Too Closely
• Failing to Stop/Yield

At approximately 1 a.m., East Bridgewater Police received a report from an officer, who was on duty on Route 18 (Bedford Street), that his vehicle had been rear-ended.

Upon arrival, police learned that while the officer was stopped at a red light in the northbound lane of Route 18, he was struck from behind by a 2013 Volkswagen Golf, driven by MACALUSO.

The officer was taken to an area hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. He was later released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

When speaking with MACALUSO, police detected a strong odor of alcohol, and following an investigation, placed him under arrest. MACALUSO suffered injuries that are not believed to be life threatening in the crash, but declined medical treatment.

The two passengers in MACALUSO’S vehicle were not injured. The police cruiser and Volkswagen were towed from the scene.

MACALUSO was transported to the East Bridgewater police station and later released on bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday at Brockton District Court.

“This man’s reckless operation caused serious injuries to a police officer,” Chief Allen said. “By driving under the influence of alcohol, he put his life, the lives of his passengers and the lives of others on the road in danger.”

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
