The following is a joint press release from EB HOPE and the South Shore Hospital. Click here for the full release and images.
EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Scott Allen is pleased to announce that EB HOPE (East Bridgewater Help, Outreach, Prevention, Education) and South Shore Hospital are once again partnering to provide Narcan training for members of the public who have family members or loved ones suffering from opioid substance use disorders (SUDs).
South Shore Hospital’s EMS Mobile Simulation Laboratory, which was generously donated by Best Chevrolet, will be on site from 5-9 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 15 at EB HOPE’s Drop-In Center at the East Bridgewater Community Covenant Church, 400 Pleasant St. South Shore Hospital’s trained paramedic professionals will conduct the training.
The first public Narcan administration training conducted by EB HOPE and South Shore Hospital took place in August. More than 60 members of the public were trained to use this important tool in giving those with substance use disorders a chance to get healthy.
“Every administration of Narcan to a person overdosing is a second chance for that person to stop using and start on the road to recovery,” Chief Allen said. “Substance use disorders touch us all in some way, so this benefits our own families, friends and neighbors.”
In addition to the Narcan training, visitors will also be able to tour the Drop-In Center and meet with more than 20 substance use disorder (SUDs) treatment and recovery organizations that have partnered with EB HOPE. The EB HOPE Drop-In Center is set up inside the church gymnasium in an “open house,” relaxed setting. EB HOPE just celebrated the Drop-In Center’s one year anniversary and, to date, has serviced approximately 500 visitors. The Drop-In Center provides services to anyone, regardless of residency, as well as the active SUDs community, family members and friends seeking SUDs support services for their loved ones.
South Shore Hospital’s Mobile Simulation Laboratory is designed with a manikin “patient” who has breathing and body control functions to simulate an actual overdose victim. South Shore Hospital’s trained paramedic professionals are able to control the manikin so trainees must not only recognize the symptoms of the overdose, but also learn to react to the “patient’s” body signals prior to administering nasal Narcan. The training sessions are recorded with instant video playback for debriefing and professional instruction of the entire simulated overdose Narcan deployment.
