East Bridgewater Police Department Reminds Community of Massachusetts’ Vulnerable Road User Law as a Right-to-Farm Community

Did you know that horseback riders are protected under Massachusetts’ Vulnerable Road User Law? Along with other vulnerable road users such as walkers, cyclists, and people operating farm equipment, horses and riders have a right to be on the road. This is particularly important to understand in East Bridgewater, a Right-to-Farm Community.

When you encounter a horse and rider on the roadway, slow down, give them at least four feet of space and be patient. Horses are easily startled by sudden movements, loud noises or passing vehicles and can put the rider, motorist and others at serious risk when spooked. Motorists should drive cautiously around them and be prepared to stop if necessary.

Drivers must exercise due care when interacting with vulnerable road users under Massachusetts law, as amended in 2023 by “An Act to Reduce Traffic Fatalities.” Failing to do so can result in fines, license suspension and mandatory education. Your caution can prevent serious injury or worse. Let’s work together to keep everyone – two-legged and four-legged – safe on our roads.
