East Bridgewater Police Remind Residents to Leash Their Dogs

EAST BRIDGEWATER — Following recent incidents of people being bitten or scratched by loose dogs, Chief Scott Allen would like to remind residents to keep their dogs on leashes and abide by the town’s dog bylaws.

“While none of the incidents we have had recently resulted in serious injury, we want to remind residents of the town’s leash laws nonetheless,” Chief Allen said.

Dogs should be held firmly by a leash or tethering device that does not exceed six feet in length. It must also be of sufficient strength to control the actions of the dog. While on town property such as roads, sidewalks and public parks, dogs that are not leashed must be under the verbal control of their owner at all times.

Residents may face fines if they do not leash or properly control their dogs when not on the owner’s property.

The town’s animal control officer may apprehend and impound any dog that is in violation of the leash bylaws. Owners can retrieve impounded dogs after producing proof of a current dog license and rabies vaccine inoculation certificate.

Dog licenses are required for dogs over six months of age and are issued for a one year period each July. Dogs must have current rabies vaccine shots as well.

Dogs can be licensed in person at the Town Clerk’s office, by mail, or online. If residents have more questions, they can refer to East Bridgewater’s dog bylaws on page 20 of the town’s bylaws.
