EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Paul O’Brien reports that a suspicious robocall was received by a resident in town today advising residents to stay home and avoid certain areas of downtown for fear of violence and looting that may occur as a result of today’s election.
These robocalls were NOT sanctioned by Town of East Bridgewater or East Bridgewater Police Department officials, and there is no threat to public safety.
These calls, which also encourage business owners to board up their storefronts out of fear of looting, are similar to ones being received in other parts of the state and across the country, as has been reported in the media. Federal authorities are reportedly investigating the source of certain calls.
“Residents should feel completely safe to head to the polls until they close at 8 p.m.,” Chief O’Brien said. “There have been no threats made to voters, poll workers or business owners in town, despite what this robocall might suggest. Our election day is moving smoothly, with peaceful groups of residents lining up patiently to exercise their rights as Americans.”
